The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) has issued a formal board resolution demanding prediction market operators serving US consumers prominently display problem gambling helpline resources within their platforms and marketing materials.
The resolution addresses the growing accessibility of prediction markets through online platforms and mobile technology, where consumers buy and sell event-based futures contracts. NCPG's board determined these markets carry "substantially similar levels of risk" to traditional sports betting, including chasing losses, impulsive behavior, financial harm, and the development of gambling-related problems.
Warning
Consumers engaging with prediction markets may not recognize their activity as functionally gambling and may be less likely to seek support for gambling problems.
The NCPG resolution specifically calls for clear, prominent, and ongoing promotion of the National Problem Gambling Helpline (1-800-MY-RESET) across prediction market platforms. The council demands implementation standards comparable to those found in regulated mobile sports betting environments.
NCPG believes that all operators offering gambling-like products should take meaningful, visible steps to reduce harm and promote access to help resources as a public health best practice.
The National Problem Gambling Helpline provides free, confidential, 24/7 support nationwide for individuals experiencing gambling-related harm. As the only national nonprofit focused on minimizing gambling addiction's economic and social costs, NCPG maintains neutrality on legalized gambling while advocating for consumer protection measures.
The resolution establishes promoting helpline access as a "critical baseline responsibility" for any operator offering products that resemble gambling activity, regardless of legal classification.
